Historical Sewing Series



Astrida Schaeffer has been making reproduction historical clothing since 1986 and custom museum mannequins since 1998. Her mannequins have appeared in museums across New England and have been published in several books as well as Costume in Performance, 2007 Historic Fashions Calendar. She has sewn for Strawbery Banke Museum, Plimoth Plantation, the American Independence Museum, and the Pavane Renaissance Dance Ensemble, among others, and is in the process of writing a book on 14th century clothing. As soon as that's finished she has plans for another on Victorian embellishment.

Victorian Gala Sash


Travel through time with your needle and learn REALLY retro embellishments for your modern wardrobe. This first in a series of classes introduces methods used in the Victorian era..


Learn Victorian piping, cording, applique, pleating, ribbon, and self–trim embellishment techniques and design a sampler sash you can wear.  Each class includes a visual tour of 19th century gown embellishments to inspire you, and every participant will receive a CD of images. 15 people max.



Fee

The fee for this 6–hour class is $120.00 plus a kit fee of $20.00.

Medieval Methods


Use medieval finishing and decorative methods to make a unique modern hat or scarf.  You'll learn edge-weaving, corded applique, self-stuffed buttons, and a spot-quilting technique called boutis.  Each class includes handouts and a visual tour of surviving medieval textiles. 15 people max

Renaissance Revival Purse


The Renaissance loved embellishment, and now you can bring that richness of detail to a clutch purse you'll never want to put down. Pearlwork, slashing, braidwork, and goldwork make this over-the-top fabulous! Each class includes visual details of surviving Renaissance clothes and clothes in art, and every participant will receive a CD of images. 15 people max

Jane Austen's Wrap


The early 1800's were a classical fashion style, deceptively simple until you looked at the details.  This class uses four self-fabric methods to embellish a light cotton wrap.  Each class includes a visual review of surviving gowns from the early 19th century to get your creative energies flowing, and every participant will receive a CD of images. 15 people max
