The Sewing Tree is honored to have Alix Joyal, founder of Mamaka Mills, and expert in custom made memory quilts, as our guest educator.  Alix uses non-traditional sewing and quilting techniques that result in very cool, functional art quilts made out of your own clothing!  Alix specialized in Textile Development at F.I.T. in NYC so is trained to work with ANY type of fabric and textile.  If you have always been intrigued by sustainable textiles and memory quilts, but didn't know where to begin, Alix's classes are for you!  Find out more about Alix at www.mamakamills.com.


Basic understanding of machine sewing required, but no prior quilting experience needed.



Supplies


It is suggested that you bring your own sewing machine, but not required. If you do bring your own machine, please also bring your foot pedal, power cord, and the manual. Please bring your own clothing or textiles that you would like to use in your own designs so that we may discuss them in class. There will also be samples and a variety of other textiles for use as well. Also, we suggest you bring your own cutting tools (scissors, rotary cutters, etc) and standard sewing supplies, but it is not required as we will have some for use during the class.


Classes


Memory Quilt Class


This class will teach you how to make a quilt from pieces of clothing in new and innovative ways. We will be exploring different types of fabrics and how to use them together in one cohesive quilt. We will be using your own fabrics and materials so please bring everything that you plan to work on for your own memory quilt.  We can use baby clothing, wedding dresses, knits, woven shirts, t shirts, etc.  The possibilities are endless!  Bring your materials and your imagination!  We will also discuss methods for having your quilt top professionally finished locally, how to prepare your top and what to expect if you decide choose this method.

Previous sewing experience is suggested.  Knowledge of your machine and basic sewing techniques are helpful.

Memory Quilt Class

T–Shirt Memory Quilt Class


T–shirts quilts have gained in popularity recently and they are fun and easy to make! In this class you will be shown how to prep your t–shirts for use in quilting as well as tips to make your quilt durable and functional!  In addition, we will explore different sewing & quilting techniques to create that visually appealing custom quilt!  We will be working on your own quilts during the class so be prepared to bring what you would like to quilt with.  We will also discuss methods for having your quilt top professionally finished locally, how to prepare your top and what to expect if you decide choose this method.

Previous sewing experience is suggested.  Knowledge of your machine and basic sewing techniques are helpful.

Custom Baby Quilt Class


This class will teach you how to make a quilt from clothing belonging to your baby as well as from blankets, hats, and other pieces of sentimental baby items!  It's a wonderful idea for parents, grandparents, and for your baby when he/she gets older!  We will be using your own fabrics and materials so please bring things that you plan to work on for your own baby quilt!  We will also discuss methods for having your quilt top professionally finished locally, how to prepare your top and what to expect if you decide choose this method.

Previous sewing experience is suggested.  Knowledge of your machine and basic sewing techniques are helpful.

Quilting Workshop


Have you taken one of Alix's quilting classes and would like to continue to work on your special quilt with the security of someone there to offer help and advice?  Join Alix's Quilting Workshop and take the fear out of quilting!  It doesn't matter which of Alix's quilting methods you are working on.  All are welcome!  Come once, come often – join the fun as many times as you like.  A great way to not let that beautiful masterpiece be set aside!

Past registration in any one of Alix's Quilting classes necessary.  Previous sewing experience is suggested.  Knowledge of your machine and basic sewing techniques are helpful.

How to Sell on Etsy 101


This class will teach you how to sell your craft items on Etsy and how to navigate this digital medium efficiently.  We will discuss how to set up your account and how to start selling as well as taking payments and shipping.  In addition, there are lots of ways to market yourself via Etsy that we will cover such as creating Treasuries and joining teams!  After this class you will be able to get yourself set up and get selling.
